Members of the Class of 1963,
Our 45th reunion is fast approaching. If you
wish to attend and have not as yet sent in your reservation
to Stan, please do so ASAP. Stan's NEW email address is stanandreeda@verizon.net.
The Country Club wants a count this week.
I have attached the schedule
of events for the weekend, and please note several
changes: due to low interest, we have canceled the Saturday
breakfast and the tours of Citizens Bank Park (which was questionable
anyhow because of the chance of the World Series being played
there) and the Battleship New Jersey. If you paid for any
of these events, we will refund your money on arrival. Instead,
we suggest that you join others in the class for a tour of
the high school at 10:30 and of Haddonfield at 1:00.
If you wish to eat lunch prior to the 1PM Haddonfield
tour, check
http://www.HaddonfieldNJ.org
for choices of restaurants.
If you wish to stay in a hotel during the weekend,
we suggest the Crowne Plaza (formerly Hilton) at 2349 W. Marlton
Pike, Cherry Hill, NJ 08002, 856-382-6180 fax 856-662-1414.
Make reservations at www.cherryhillcrowne.com
and use "best available" for the rate; the rates
quoted are better than if you use AARP or AAA.
The Class Dinner will be held at the Merchantville
Country Club, 501 Chapel Ave. in
Merchantville. You cannot get to MCC from Chapel Ave. off
of Route 38 because Chapel Ave. is closed south of MCC. So
from Route 38, go north on Cuthbert Blvd. At the light at
Camden Catholic HS, bear right onto Hinchman Ave. (Courier
Post is on your left, inspection station is on your right)
and proceed to the next light (Chapel Ave.). Turn right onto
Chapel Ave. and then right into MCC. (If you get lost, call
Kathy Baxter's cell at 856-296-4600 and she will assist you.)
Two faculty guests will be attending the dinner...John
Gibbs and Martin Beer, who many of us had for English and
Geometry in our sophomore year. If you have any thoughts or
remembrances about John, please send them to Gwen Duffy Art,
who will be introducing him, at gwen_art@yahoo.com.
Comments regarding Martin should come to me at hryder@verizon.net.
We will have a silent auction to raise money
for our class scholarship fund. We need your donations to
make it successful! Please consider gift certificates (from
national chains), bottles of wine, golf balls or accessories,
webpage or logo design, one hour legal consultation (if you
are a lawyer), time at your vacation home, exchange of your
local (primary) house for a week with a classmate who lives
at a distance (with pictures and details as to location, number
of rooms), etc. If you have an item you wish to donate, please
send a description to Lynn Ganary McDevitt at lynn.mcdevitt@i-aviation.com.
If you are interested in donating your class ring to the scholarship
fund, please contact Kathy Welsh Baxter at kathy@compassrosedesign.com.
Kathy had donated a stained glass window to
the silent auction, a picture of which is attached.
This window was fabricated by our late classmate, Paul Friend
who, as you may know, was a nationally recognized glass artisan.
Made in 2005, the piece was originally intended to be suspended
as a room divider but can be removed from the frame and used
as an actual window. The iris flowers and leaves have been
hand painted before firing to add dimension. The window measures
27" wide x 37 1/2" high (OD of frame) The glass
itself is approx. 24" x 34 1/2". The original cost
of this piece was $1,975.00. There is a reserve bid of $500.00.
We will be sending a list of other donations via email during
the week of October 19. You need not be present to submit
a bid, but you have to figure out a way to claim anything
you win. If you attend and plan to bid, you should bring your
checkbook so you can settle up that evening. (No, we don't
take Visa or Mastercard.)
Many of you will bring digital camera to the
reunion. We are planning to ask you to send your pictures
to a yet-unnamed classmate who will compile them into a CD
that we will distribute to anyone who would like one.
And a note on the football game on Friday night:
Haddonfield (4-0) will be hosting West Deptford (4-0), the
current state champions. Haddonfield's quarterback, junior
Mike Bhaya, who also plays defensive back, is making a name
for himself in the Colonial Conference. Against Woodbury,
he scored two touchdowns and had two interceptions. Against
Gateway, he returned a fumble for a touchdown. Against Sterling,
he rushed for 176 yards and four touchdowns and passed for
another. He recovered a fumble to set up another TD, as did
his pass interception. And last week, against Overbrook in
Haddonfield's 500th all-time football victory, he ran for
two TDs and passed for 183 yards and two more TDs. It won't
be a ho-hum game on the 24th! And here's a trivia question:
When was the first HMHS football victory, who was the opponent,
and what was the score?
Finally, we regret to inform you that Dick Brozo
passed away at his home in Maple Grove MN on July 7. He is
survived by his daughter Beth Ann, his mother Dorothy, sisters
Barbara and Gail, brothers Ronald and Michael and two grandchildren.
The family requested donations in his memory be made to the
Tiger Woods Foundation National Junior Golf Team (created
to bridge the gap between inner-city playgrounds and the international
sports arena) at TWFNJGT, 121 Innovation, Suite 150, Irvine
CA 92617.
